This 2022, groundwater, an invisible resource, will have an impact everywhere.

Groundwater is the groundwater found in aquifers, the geological formations of rocks, sands, and gravels that contain significant amounts of water. Groundwater feeds springs, rivers, lakes, and swamps, and infiltrates the oceans.

Groundwater is mainly recharged by rain and snow infiltrating the ground. Groundwater can be extracted at the surface through pipes and wells.

Life is not possible without groundwater. Most of the arid parts of the world are dependent on groundwater. Groundwater supplies most of the water we use for drinking, sanitation, food production, and industrial processes.

It is also important for the healthy functioning of ecosystems such as wetlands and rivers.

We need to protect them from over-exploitation – from absorbing more water than they can recharge from rain and snow, and from the pollution that currently plagues them, as this reduces the resource, the additional costs of processing, and sometimes the use of it.

Groundwater exploration, conservation, and sustainable use will be central to survival, adaptation to climate change, and meeting the needs of a growing population.

History of the day

The idea for this International Day goes back to 1992 when the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was held in Rio de Janeiro.

That same year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring March 22 of each year as World Water Day, which has been observed since 1993.

Later, other celebrations and events were added. For example, the year of international cooperation in the watershed is 2013, and the current international decade is water for sustainable development, 2018-2028. These adjustments help reaffirm the importance of water and sanitation measures for poverty reduction, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
